Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name John Innes.
Etymology: < the name of John Innes (1829–1904), English property developer and philanthropist, who bequeathed land and money for the foundation (in 1910, originally in south London) of the John Innes Horticultural Institution (now the John Innes Centre), for research into plant breeding and other aspects of horticulture.

Designating potting composts and fertilizers made according to formulae developed at the John Innes Horticultural Institution, and the formulae for such composts and fertilizers.The John Innes composts were developed for various purposes including the sowing of seeds, the raising of seedlings, and the growing on of plants of different types. Most of the original formulae called for a proportion of loam.
