Etymology: Apparently humorously < the male forename John (see John n.) + dory n.²With the β. forms compare a prep.² The name of the fish may have been suggested by ‘a very popular old song or catch’ printed in 1609, and often alluded to in 17th-cent. sources (see quots. below), the subject of which is the career of John Dory, captain of a French privateer. (a) at St. Peter n. b), are to be discounted.
