Origin: Apparently from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name John , dory n.2
Etymology: Apparently humorously < the male forename John (see John n.) + dory n.2With the β. forms compare a prep.2 The name of the fish may have been suggested by ‘a very popular old song or catch’ printed in 1609, and often alluded to in 17th-cent. sources (see quots. below), the subject of which is the career of John Dory, captain of a French privateer. See R. Nares Gloss. (1822) (at cited word), and compare:1609 T. Ravenscroft Deuteromelia 59 Iohn Dory bought him an ambling Nag..to Paris for to ride a.1645 J. Milton Colasterion 16 Then asks my opinion of John a Nokes, and John a Stiles;..I for my part think John Dory, was a better man then both of them.1655 J. Mennes & J. Smith Musarum Deliciæ 17 But I to Paris rid along Much like John Dory in the song Upon a holy Tide. Ingenious suggestions purporting to explain the name from a supposed French compound *jaune dorée ‘yellow John Dory’, or from Italian gianitore janitor n. (which is only attested in the sense ‘caretaker, doorkeeper, janitor’), in allusion to the Spanish name of the fish, San Pedro (compare St. Peter's fish n. (a) at St. Peter n. b), are to be discounted.
Either of the two marine fishes of the genus Zeus (family Zeidae), with laterally compressed bodies; esp. the widespread and edible Z. faber, which has a large dark spot near each pectoral fin and long spines on the dorsal fin.Cf. dory n.2, St. Peter's fish n. at St. Peter n. b.
