单词 john crow
释义

John Crown.

Brit. /ˈdʒɒn krəʊ/, U.S. /ˈdʒɑn ˌkroʊ/
Forms: also with lower-case initials.
Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: English cyan-crow , carrion crow n.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration of Jamaican English cyan-crow, variant of carrion crow n., in the same sense (see note), after the male forename John (see John n.), perhaps with specific reference to the Rev. John Crow (d. 1692), Irish clergyman at Port Royal, Jamaica, who preached a notoriously unpopular sermon in 1689. Perhaps also influenced by a word in a West African language (compare Ewe dongro, denoting a large bird with sparse plumage). See further F. G. Cassidy in Amer. Speech (1967) 42 193, F. G. Cassidy & R. B. Le Page Dict. Jamaican Eng. (1967) at John-Crow.Jamaican English cyan-crow (earliest attested 1924, but presumably current earlier) is a variant of carrion crow n. with shortening of the first element and palatalization of the initial /k/ before a front vowel (common in Caribbean English).
