Inflections: Plural Kagyupas, unchanged.
Forms: 1800s Kah-gyu-pa, 1800s– Kahgyudpa, 1800s– Kahgyupa, 1800s– Kar-gyu-pa, 1800s– Kargyu-pa, 1800s– Kargyupa, 1800s– Kargyutpa, 1900s– Bkargyudpa, 1900s– bKa’rgyudpa, 1900s– Ka-gyu-pa, 1900s– Kagyu-pa, 1900s– Kagyü-pa, 1900s– Kagyupa, 1900s– Kargupa (nonstandard).
Origin: A borrowing from Tibetan. Etymon: Tibetan bka'.brgyud.pa.
Etymology: < Tibetan bka'.brgyud.pa < bka'.brgyud oral lineage, specifically the oral transmission of the word of the Buddha, also used as the name of one of the three Red Hat schools of Tibetan Buddhism ( < bka' word + brgyud thread, string) + -pa, suffix forming nouns denoting a person.English forms showing b- or -d-/-t- reflect the spelling of the etymon in Tibetan, which is based on the pronunciation of an earlier stage of that language. The placement of the capital letter in such forms reflects different transliteration conventions; Tibetan script does not have equivalents to capital and lower-case letters. Forms beginning in kar- or bkar- may reflect a folk-etymological alteration after Tibetan bkar white.
