Japheticadj.

Brit. /dʒəˈfɛtɪk/, /dʒeɪˈfɛtɪk/, U.S. /dʒəˈfɛdɪk/
Forms:

α. 1700s Japetick, 1700s– Japetic (now nonstandard).

β. 1700s– Japhetic, 1800s– Japhethic (rare).

γ. 1800s–1900s Jephetic.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Iapeticus ; proper name Japheth , -ic suffix.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin Iapeticus (1577 or earlier; 1710 in Leibniz as Japeticus) < Iapetus Japheth (1577 or earlier: see note) + -icus -ic suffix. In β. forms < the name of Japhet (also Japheth: see Japhethite n.) + -ic suffix. Compare earlier Japhetian adj.Compare French japétique (1710 or earlier), japhétique (1769 or earlier). Variation in the form of the name in Latin. Post-classical Latin Iapeticus derives from Iapetus , variant of the name Iapheth (see Japhethite n.), which may have arisen by association with classical Latin Iapetus (ancient Greek Ἰαπετός : see Iapetus n.), the name of one of the Titans, whose sons were sometimes regarded as the ancestors of humankind. In classical Latin and post-classical Latin the name of the biblical patriarch is almost invariably Iaphet or Iapheth , while the name of the Titan is Iapetus or Japetus . In early modern English Iapetus and Japetus are very common denoting the Titan, but also occur fairly frequently denoting the son of Noah. Specific forms. In γ. forms perhaps after Hebrew Yep̱eṯ, the Hebrew form of the name of Japheth.
Of, relating to, or belonging to any of the peoples mentioned in Genesis 10:2–5 as descended from Japheth, one of the sons of Noah.Sometimes used to designate the Indo-European family of languages or the peoples speaking them. Japhetic theory: a theory promulgated by the Russian linguist Nikolaj Jakovlevič Marr (see Marrism n.) that the Kartvelian languages of the Caucasus are related to the Semitic languages, and (as subsequently developed) that these are related to other isolated languages such as Basque and Etruscan.
