单词 jeune fille
释义

jeune fillen.adj.

Brit. /ˌʒəːn ˈfiː/, U.S. /ˌʒən ˈfi/
Inflections: Plural jeunes filles, (rare) jeune filles.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French jeune fille.
Etymology: < French jeune fille girl (late 14th cent. in Middle French) < jeune young (beginning of the 12th cent. in Old French as juvene ; < classical Latin iuvenis : see juvenile adj.) + fille daughter, girl (see file n.3).Not fully naturalized in English. Although French jeune fille is already attested in Middle French, it only superseded the simplex fille as the usual word for ‘girl’ at the beginning of the 19th cent. This was due to the fact that the simplex had developed a pejorative sense ‘prostitute’ (16th cent. in Middle French; short for fille de joie fille de joie n.) and consequently came to be avoided in the sense ‘girl’. The first authors who exclusively used jeune fille in the unmarked sense ‘girl’ appear to have been women writing for an audience of young girls. In plural form jeunes filles after the French plural form.
Esp. in French-speaking contexts: a young girl. Also occasionally as predicative adj.: characteristic of a young girl or ingénue.
