Any of several small Asian freshwater fishes of the genus Oryzias (family Oryziatidae), commonly found in paddy fields and popular in aquaria; esp. (more fully Japanese medaka) O. latipes of Japan. Also called killifish, ricefish.Medakas were formerly placed in the family Cyprinodontidae.
