Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese janken.
Etymology: < Japanese janken (1850) < jan (of uncertain origin, probably representing a regional (Nagasaki) pronunciation of ryan two, two-finger gesture in ken games (1809 or earlier): see note) + ken fist, type of game played with hand gestures (see ken n.5). Compare Japanese regional (Oita, Kyushu) ryanken denoting the game.Japanese ryan appears to be a relatively recent borrowing of the Chinese word now attested as liǎng two, pair (see liang n.); compare the more common Japanese ryō two, pair (borrowed earlier < the Middle Chinese antecedent of the same Chinese word: see ryo n.); compare ryōken two fists. With the β. forms compare Japanese jan ken pon, jan ken po, jan ken poi, calls made while playing the game (1903); sometimes also used as name of the game. The origin of the final element in these forms is uncertain.
In Japanese contexts: = rock paper scissors n. Also as int. (chiefly in form jan-ken-pon): the call used to signal the beginning of a round.
