Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: astro- comb. form, sphere n.
Etymology: < astro- comb. form + sphere n., after German Astrosphäre (H. Fol 1891, in Anatomischer Anzeiger 6 273).
Cell Biology.
Originally: the aster (aster n. 4(a)) of a dividing cell, or the outer portion of this, exclusive of the centrosome. Later also: the centrosome of a cell.
