Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit jaya, jay.
Etymology: < Sanskrit jaya (also with vernacular pronunciation jay) < an inflected form (either jayatu , 3rd singular imperative or jayati , 3rd singular indicative) of ji- to win, be victorious, to overcome (see Jain n.).
Indian English.
Used as an expression of praise or support, esp. in political slogans or at public events: ‘Victory!’, ‘Long live ——!’. Cf. Jai Hind int.
