Etymology: < Joachimstaler, Joachimsthaler, †Joachimthaler (1530 as joachimstaller , joachamtaler ) < the name of Joachimsthal (see note) + -er -er suffix1, so called because the coin was originally minted there from local silver in 1518, initially as one of several silver coins of equal value to the gulden (see gulden n.). Compare earlier yokindale n. Compare also earlier thaler n.Joachimsthal (also Joachimstal and more fully Sankt Joachimsthal ), is the name in German of Jáchymov (Czech Jáchymov ), a mining and spa town in the Czech Republic, formerly (until 1918) under German-speaking administration. It is < Joachims- , combining form of Joachim , the name of a saint, the husband of St Anne + Tal , †Thal dale n.1 The unchanged plural form reflects the German plural Joachimsthaler.

A large silver coin first minted in the early 16th cent. from silver mined in Joachimsthal (now Jáchymov) in the Czech Republic.The Joachimsthaler is the oldest type of thaler and was the most common German silver coin before the introduction of the mark (mark n.2 2d) in 1872.Cf. dollar n., thaler n. (both from a shortening of Joachimsthaler in German).
