Most of the later occurrences appear to refer to Skelton's Phyllyp Sparrowe, or at least to have the same origin. Obsolete. [The variant fend cut suggests a fencing phrase: but there is the great difficulty, referred to above, of the early date of the phrase, which makes it doubtful whether it really belongs to this word; and its place here must be considered as merely provisional.]
