Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French Arvanite; Greek Ἀρβανίτης.
Etymology: < (i) French Arvanite (1808 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek Ἀρβανίτης (plural Ἀρβανίται (modern Greek plural Αρβανίτες )): see Albanian n.2 and adj.3 Compare Ottoman Turkish Arvanid (15th cent.), German Arvanit (1814), Italian Arvanito (1821). Compare earlier Arnaut n.In plural form Arvaniti after the Italian plural form.
Originally (in the Ottoman Empire (esp. among Greek-speakers)): an Albanian (now historical). Subsequently: spec. a member or descendant of an Albanian-speaking people inhabiting parts of Greece, descended from emigrants from Albania in the Middle Ages. Also occasionally: the Albanian dialect of this people; = Arvanitika n.The Arvanites are traditionally Orthodox Christians, and are largely assimilated to ethnic Greek culture.
