/ˈʌɪsəʊtrɒn/ A machine for separating isotopes emitted as ions from an extended source by accelerating them by means of a varying electric field, which causes ions of like mass to bunch together, and applying a transverse radio-frequency field synchronized with the arrival of the bunches, so that the ions are deflected by an amount dependent on their mass.
