Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: iono- comb. form, -gen comb. form.
Etymology: < iono- comb. form + -gen comb. form, perhaps after German Ionogen (1900 or earlier).
Physical Chemistry.
A compound which exists as ions when dissolved in a solvent; an electrolyte, esp. a weak electrolyte.
