Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἰωνίζειν.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἰωνίζειν to speak Ionic < ancient Greek Ἴωνες (plural) Ionians (see Ionian adj.2) + -ίζειν -ize suffix. Compare German ionisieren (1806 or earlier with reference to customs, 1819 or earlier with reference to language, both as ionisiren ). Compare earlier Ionizing adj.1, and also earlier Ionicize v.
Now rare.

Etymology: < ion n. + -ize suffix. In sense 2 after German ionisiren (1893 or earlier in both transitive and intransitive uses; now ionisieren ); compare French ioniser (1895; also used reflexively in sense 1). Compare earlier ionization n.2 In sense 3 after ionization n.2 2.
