Origin: Apparently from a proper name. Etymons: proper name Astrophel, Astrophil.

Etymology: Apparently < Astrophel, variant of Astrophil, the name which Sir Philip Sidney bestowed upon the (partly autobiographical) central character of his poem sequence Astrophil and Stella. In the poem sequence, the name Astrophil is to be interpreted etymologically as ‘star-lover’ (compare astro- comb. form and -phile comb. form), naming the lover of Stella , etymologically ‘star’. In the poem by Spenser cited in quot. 1595, which is an elegy on the death of Sidney, Astrophel is used as the name of a flower into which the characters of Astrophil and Stella are taken to have been metamorphosed. In the earlier poem by Spenser cited in quot. 1591 there is no direct allusion to Sidney, but probably the same connection is intended. (Compare Spenser Encycl. (1990) 74.)

Now historical and rare.

A bitter plant mentioned by Spenser with red flowers which fade to blue.The plant has been variously identified with the aster Aster tripolium, the speedwell Veronica chamaedrys, and the forget-me-not, Myosotis scorpioides, among others.
