Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin astropecten.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin astropecten (J. H. Linck 1733, in De stellis marinis II. 26) < astro- astro- comb. form + classical Latin pecten comb (see pecten n.).
Zoology.
A genus of starfishes of the family Astropectinidae, characterized by five short, tapering arms with spines along each edge; (also astropecten) a starfish of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: J. E. Gray 1840, in Ann. & Mag. Nat. Hist. 6 180.
