Etymology: < Latin irritānt-em, present participle of irritāre to make void, irritate v.2: compare French irritant (1762 in Dict. Acad.).Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈirritant.
Roman Law, Civil Law, and Scots Law.
Rendering null and void. irritant clause: ‘a clause by which certain prohibited acts specified in a deed, if committed by the person holding under the deed, are declared to be void and null’ (W. Bell Dict. Law Scotl. 1861).
