Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French astronomien.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French astronomien (1119 in Old French; French †astronomien , obsolete after the second half of the 17th cent.) < astronomie astronomy n. + -ien -ian suffix. Compare Franco-Provençal estrolomien (c1290), Old Occitan astronomian (c1300). Compare later astronomer n., and also astrologian n.With the form astronomian compare -ian suffix. With the β. forms, which are not paralleled in French, compare the β. forms at astronomy n.
Now historical and rare.
An astronomer, an astrologer.In later use apparently only with reference to the use by Gower (compare quot. a1393).
