单词 iroquoian
释义

Iroquoiann.adj.

Brit. /ɪrəˈkwɔɪən/, U.S. /ˈɪrəˌkwɔɪən/
Forms:

α. 1600s Iroquean.

β. 1600s–1700s Iroquian.

γ. 1800s– Iroquoian, 1800s– Iroquoisan.

δ. 1800s– Iroquoisian (rare).

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Iroquois n., -ean suffix, -ian suffix, -an suffix.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < Iroqu- (in Iroquois n.) + -ean suffix, partly (in β. forms) < Iroqu- (in Iroquois n.) + -ian suffix, partly (in γ. forms) < Iroquois n. + -an suffix, and partly (in δ. forms) < Iroquois n. + -ian suffix. The α. and β. forms are early formations referring directly to the Iroquois Confederacy. The γ. and δ. forms are later scholarly formations to denote the language group containing (but not limited to) the languages spoken by members of the (by then historical) Iroquois Confederacy and (hence) the speakers of these languages. Compare the following isolated example of a slightly earlier derivative of Iroquois n. with a different suffix (probably -ine suffix1):1685 F. Spence tr. P. Duval Geographia universalis 147 Those who observe that antipathy amongst the Nations of the World, say, that it is between..the Irish and Welch, betwixt the Hurons and Iroquins Nations of Canada [Fr. les Hurons & les Iroquois]. Among the γ. forms, the form Iroquoian reflects the pronunciation of Iroquois n., with silent -s.
