Etymology: < iron n.¹ + wort n.¹, after classical Latin sidērītis siderite n.² R. Dodoens Cruydt-boeck (1554), the source on which quot. 1562 is based, does not use a Dutch parallel in its chapter on Sideritis. Dutch ijzerkruid is not attested denoting Sideritis until much later (late 18th cent.); in early modern Dutch (late 16th cent.), it denoted plants of the genus Verbena, as do German Eisenwurz (Middle High German īsarnwurz, īsenwurze) and Eisenkraut (Middle High German īsencrūt).

Any of various small shrubs or herbs constituting the genus Sideritis (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)), native chiefly to the Mediterranean and used medicinally; frequently with distinguishing word.
