Etymology: < iron n.1 + stone n. Compare Middle Low German īsenstēn, īserenstēn, German Eisenstein (Middle High German (in late sources) īsenstein). N.E.D. (1900) also gives the pronunciation (əi·əɹnˌstŏn) /ˈaɪənstən/.
Any of various hard sedimentary rocks which contain a high proportion of iron compounds; rock from which iron can be smelted, iron ore.clay, minette, red ironstone, etc.: see the first element.
