Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Invertebrata.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Invertebrata, former division name (1822 or earlier; more fully animalia invertebrata ) < classical Latin in- in- prefix⁴ + vertebra joint, especially of the spine (see vertebra n.) + -āta , neuter plural of -ātus -ate suffix² (compare -a suffix²), after French invertébrés , plural noun (see invertebrate n.). Compare Vertebrata n. Compare also invertebrate n. 1.

With plural agreement. Originally (in the system of Lamarck): a major division of the animal kingdom comprising all animals other than the vertebrates. In later use (usually in form invertebrata): a collective term for invertebrates (now rare in technical use).Invertebrates constitute the great majority of all animals and represent a number of unrelated phyla.
