Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Artiodactyla.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Artiodactyla, suborder name (R. Owen 1848, in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 4 131) < ancient Greek ἄρτιος even in number (see artiad n.) + -δακτυλος -dactyl comb. form. Compare perissodactyl adj., perissodactyl n.
Zoology.
A. adj.
Belonging to or characteristic of the mammalian order Artiodactyla, which comprises ungulates (both living and extinct) with an even number of toes on each foot; designating this order. Contrasted with perissodactyl adj.The order (formerly a suborder) includes cattle, antelopes, sheep and goats, pigs, camels, deer, giraffes, and hippopotamuses.
