Lexicon (rev. ed.) 507/2 It [sc. intussusceptio] means the introduction of one part of the intestinal canal—intussusceptum—into another, which serves it as a sort of vagina or sheath. Generally, it is the upper part of the small intestine, which is received into the lower—intussuscipiens—when the intussusception is said to be progressive.
1884 F. Treves Intestinal Obstructions viii. 168 The external of the three layers is known as the intussuscipiens, the sheath, or the receiving layer... The innermost cylinder is known as the entering layer..and the middle one as the returning layer... Taken together, these two layers form the intussusceptum.
