Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: iron adj., lung n.; iron n.1, lung n.
Etymology: Probably partly < iron adj. + lung n., and partly < iron n.1 + lung n. In sense 1 after German Eisenlunge (F. A. Zenker 1867, in Deutsches Arch. f. klin. Med. 2 130).
1. Pathology. Accumulation of iron in the lung resulting from the inhalation of dust containing iron; siderosis of the lung; a lung affected by this. Now historical and rare.

2. Originally U.S. A type of mechanical respirator consisting of an airtight metal case, capable of enclosing a patient's entire body below the neck, within which alternating negative and positive pressure is created to reproduce the normal respiratory movements of the chest wall and lungs. Now chiefly historical.The iron lung was developed by Philip Drinker and Louis Agassiz Shaw in 1928, and came into widespread use soon afterwards in the treatment of patients with poliomyelitis.
