Etymology: < iron adj. + hat n.With sense 1 compare Middle Dutch īserhoet (Dutch ijzerhoed ), Middle Low German īsernhōt , īsenhōt , Middle High German īsenhuot (German Eisenhut ), Old Norwegian járnhattr , Old Danish iarnhath (only as surname; Danish (now rare) jærnhat ), and post-classical Latin capellus ferreus (from 12th cent. in British sources; also in continental sources), capellus de ferro (14th cent. in British sources; also in continental sources). In sense 2 after French chapeau de fer (1811 (in the passage translated in quot. 1811) or earlier in this sense), itself after German †eiserner Huth (1807 or earlier in this sense; now eiserner Hut).
