Etymology: < (i) Middle French instructif having the quality of imparting knowledge or conveying useful information (14th cent.; French instructif ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin instructivus (13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin instruct- , past participial stem of instruere instruct v. + -īvus -ive suffix.
