abreidadv.

Brit. /əˈbriːd/, U.S. /əˈbrid/, Scottish English /əˈbrid/
Forms: late Middle English o brede, 1600s abread (northern); English regional (northern and north midlands) 1800s– abread, 1800s– abrede, 1800s– abreed, 1900s– abreead (Yorkshire); Scottish pre-1700 1800s abread, pre-1700 1900s– abreid, 1700s– abreed, 1900s– abrede.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: on brede at brede n.2 Phrases 1.
Etymology: < on brede at brede n.2 Phrases 1, with reduction of the first element (compare a prep.1). With the Middle English form o brede compare o , variant of on prep. Compare earlier abroad adv. With the reduction of the first element in the word compare variants of on length and brede at brede n.2 Phrases 2 such as a lengthe and a brede (compare the variant reading in quot. c1390 at brede n.2 Phrases 2) and (in different sense, but reflecting similar phonological reduction of the preposition) a bræde in quot. c1275 at brede n.2 1a; compare a prep.1 and a- prefix3. In early use often written as two words. (Word division in Middle English examples frequently reflects editorial choices of modern editors of texts, rather than the practice of the manuscripts.) Quot. 1658 is from a writer of northern origin, but it is not certain that abread does not simply show a typographical error for abroad.
Scottish and English regional (northern and north midlands) after Middle English.
= abroad adv. (in various senses).
