Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin internecīvus.
Etymology: < classical Latin internecīvus fought to the death, devastating, murderous < interneciō internecion n. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare French internecif (1806 or earlier). Compare earlier internecine adj.
Now somewhat rare.
Of a conflict: (originally) mutually destructive or antagonistic; (now chiefly) taking place within a group or society, internal. Cf. internecine adj. 1b, 3.
