Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit āśrama.
Etymology: < Sanskrit āśrama (also with vernacular pronunciation āśram) each of the stages of a religious life, place of retreat (see ashram n.), both with reference to the tasks or spiritual exercise associated (respectively) with the time or place.
Hinduism.
Each of the four stages of an ideal life.The four ashramas are: brahmacharya (characterized by education and celibacy), grihastha (characterized by home ownership and parenthood), vanaprastha (characterized by retirement from work and a partial renunciation of worldly things), and sanyasi (characterized by total renunciation of the world).
