单词 ashrafi
释义

ashrafin.

Brit. /ˈaʃrəfi/, U.S. /ˈɑʃrəˌfi/
Forms: 1700s ashreffi, 1700s– ashrafee, 1700s– ashrafi, 1800s ashruffy, 1800s– ashrafie, 1800s– ashrafy, 1800s– ashrefi, 1800s– ashrefy, 1900s– ashrufie.
Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian 'ašrafī.
Etymology: < Persian 'ašrafī < Arabic 'ašrafī < 'ašraf most noble, elative of šarīf noble, honourable, exalted (see shereef n.) + -i suffix2, originally with reference to the honorific title al-'Ašraf ‘the Most Noble’ taken by several 15th-cent. Mameluke rulers of Egypt, among them Abu'l-Naṣr Barsbāy, sultan of Egypt 1422–38, who introduced the coin c1426. Compare earlier sherifi n.The forms ashreffi, ashrefi, and ashrefy probably reflect a Persian regional pronunciation (perhaps influenced by an Ottoman Turkish form: see sherifi n.). Persian 'ašrafī originally denoted a 15th-cent. gold coin of Western Iran based on that of the Mamelukes; it subsequently became the name of other coins in the Safavid Empire and after 1737 specifically denoted a new coin equivalent to the Mughal mohur (compare Indian Persian muhr-i 'ašrafī (18th cent.); compare mohur n.).
Now historical.
Any of various gold coins formerly used in Persia (now Iran) and India, spec. one originally equivalent to the mohur (cf. mohur n.).
