Etymology: < Spanish abrazo embrace (c1500; second quarter of the 15th cent. as †abraço ) < †abraçar (now abrazar ) to embrace (a1207; compare Catalan abraçar (14th cent.), Portuguese abraçar (13th cent.)) < a- ad- prefix + †braço (now brazo ) arm (see brace n.²). Compare Portuguese abraço embrace (15th cent.; < abraçar ). Compare embrace n., and also embrace v.² O.E.D. (1989) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciations /aˈbraθo/, /-so/.

In Spain, Latin America, and (more recently) North America: an embrace used as a salutation on meeting or parting.
