Etymology: < iron n.¹ + alum n.¹, perhaps after German Eisenalaun (1822 or earlier in sense 1, 1839 or earlier in sense 2) or French alun de fer (1814 or earlier in sense 1, 1833 or earlier in sense 2). With sense 2 compare also post-classical Latin alumen ferrosum (1844 or earlier: see quot. 1844).
