Etymology: < Arabic intifāḍa lit. ‘a jumping up (in reaction to some external stimulus)’, < intafaḍa be shaken, shake oneself.
An Arab uprising or revolt, spec. the Palestinian insurrection and unrest in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, which began in late 1987.
