Etymology: < Latin inquīsīt-, participial stem of inquīrĕre to inquire v.: perhaps back-formation < inquisition. (It corresponds in form to a Latin frequentative of inquīrĕre; and also partly to French enquêter, Old French enquester, medieval Latin *inquestāre to make inquest.)
