Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin arthritis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin arthritis pain in the joints, gout (3rd cent.; in classical Latin as a Greek word) < ancient Greek ἀρθρῖτις (also νόσος ἀρθρῖτις arthritic disease) < ἄρθρον joint (see arthro- comb. form) + -ῖτις -itis suffix. Compare earlier arthritic adj., arthritic n.
Medicine.
Originally: painful disease of the joints, esp. gout. Later more widely: inflammation of a joint or joints; an instance or specific type of this. Also (esp. in gen. use): = osteoarthritis n.Lyme, rheumatoid arthritis: see the first element.
