Etymology: < post-classical Latin Indus (1598: see note at definition), spec. use of classical Latin Indus inhabitant of India, Indian < ancient Greek Ἰνδός inhabitant of India, Indian, the River Indus (see India n.).The use of the Latin genitive case form as a postmodifier in star names is a practice that originated in post-classical Latin.
Astronomy.
(The name of) an inconspicuous constellation of the southern hemisphere, between Capricornus and the south celestial pole, said to represent a North American Indian; the Indian. Also (in form Indi) used as a postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Ind (no point).Discovered by P. D. Keyser and F. de Houtman in 1595–7, named on the celestial globe of P. Plancius in 1598, and published by Johann Bayer in Uranometria (1603) sig. Aaa.
