abrasev.

Brit. /əˈbreɪz/, U.S. /əˈbreɪz/
Forms: late Middle English– abrase, 1500s–1600s abrace, 1800s– abraze.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin abrās-, abrādere.
Etymology: < classical Latin abrās-, past participial stem of abrādere abrade v. Compare Middle French, French abraser to demolish (1364 in an isolated attestation), to remove (writing) by scraping (a1481 in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from the 20th cent. in general sense ‘to wear down, smooth, or damage by rubbing or scraping’, chiefly in medical and technological contexts). Compare later abrade v., abrase adj., and abrasion n., and also earlier raze v. and later erase v.The forms abrace and abraze probably result from association with race v.2 and raze v. respectively. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăbrēi·s) /əˈbreɪs/.
