Etymology: < Latin type *infīnītūdo , probably in medieval or modern Latin (after multitūdo , magnitūdo , etc.). Cotgrave, 1611, has the corresponding French infinitude = infinité , and Florio has Italian infinitudine ‘infinitenesse, endlesnesse’. Compare finitude n., which has no Italian or French equivalent, and may have been formed after this; also the later definitude n.
1. The quality or attribute of being infinite; boundlessness. Also in hyperbolical sense: Immensity, vastness (cf. infinite adj. 1b).
