Etymology: < a- prefix⁶ + ancient Greek βράγχια gills (see branchiae n.) + -ate suffix², after scientific Latin Abranchiata (1828 or earlier), Abranchiatae (1831 or earlier), group names, which are in turn after French Abranches, plural noun ( Cuvier Le règne animal (1817) II. 516). Compare French abranche (adjective) belonging to a former group of annelids (1830 in the passage translated in quot. 1831, in a revised edition of Cuvier). Compare slightly later abranchial adj., branchiate adj. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăbræ·ŋkiĕt) /əˈbræŋkɪət/.
