Etymology: < Old French ascriv- stem of ascrire, cognate with Italian ascrivere, < Latin ascrībĕre, adscrībĕre, < ad- to + scrībĕre to write. In 16th cent. altered to ascribe after Latin, though ascrive was occasionally used till late in the 17th cent. The historical appearance of the senses in English does not correspond with the logical development in Latin.
I. To write into; to add to a writing, register, list, etc.
