Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French indigénat.
Etymology: < French indigénat (in code de l'indigénat legal system applying to indigenous residents of French colonies (1875 or earlier) and régime de l'indigénat, in the same sense (1881 or earlier)): see indigenate n.Not fully naturalized in English.
Now historical.
A system of laws formerly giving the native or indigenous residents of French colonies an inferior status in law. Also more fully code (also regime) of the indigénat. The Code de l'indigénat introduced in Algeria and Cochin-China in 1881 set harsher (and often arbitrary) criminal penalties for indigenous residents and provided for the appropriation of their lands. Versions of the Code introduced in various parts of the French Empire (especially Africa) from 1887 onwards allowed summary punishments—ranging from fines to death—for certain crimes, permitted the use of indigenous people as forced labour, and subjected them to arbitrary taxation. Beginning in the 1920s, some of the more widely criticized aspects of the Code were reformed. The Brazzaville Conference of 1944 promised the suppression of the Code, and in 1946 citizenship was extended to indigenous people throughout the empire, before the last legislative planks of the Code were removed in 1947.
