Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Artemia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Artemia, genus name ( W. E. Leach in Dict. des sci. nat. (1819) XIV. 543) < ancient Greek Ἄρτεμις , the name of the goddess Artemis (see artemisia n.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1.
Zoology.
A genus of branchiopod crustaceans (order Anostraca) comprising small shrimp-like animals found in salt lakes, salt pans, and other aquatic habitats with a high salinity. Also: an animal of this genus, esp. one of the common species A. salina, sometimes bred as aquarium food (also in form artemia); also called brine shrimp.
