A social and political movement in Latin America advocating the increased involvement, influence, or representation of indigenous people in public policy, culture, education, employment, etc. Cf. indigenism n. and indigenista n.Typically associated with Peru and Mexico, where it was most prominent in the first half of the 20th cent., the precise characteristics of indigenismo have varied between regions and over time. From the late 20th cent. onwards, indigenismo has sometimes faced criticism for paternalism and for promoting the assimilation and acculturation of contemporary indigenous peoples into the dominant Spanish or Portuguese culture (see, for example, quot. 1996).
