释义

infectuousadj.

Brit. /ɪnˈfɛktjʊəs/, /ɪnˈfɛktʃʊəs/, U.S. /ᵻnˈfɛk(t)ʃ(əw)əs/
Forms: late Middle English– infectuous, 1500s infectuos.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin infectus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin infectus (u -stem) action of dyeing ( < infect- , past participial stem of inficere infect v. + -tus , suffix forming verbal nouns) + -ous suffix, perhaps after Middle French infectueux (1381; French infectueux )). Compare post-classical Latin infectuosus infected, poisoned (a1564 in a British source), Spanish †infectuoso (1426). Compare earlier infective adj. Compare also earlier affectuous adj. and later defectuous adj.
