1. Natural rubber or caoutchouc, a polymerization product that is the coagulated latex of certain trees and other plants of South America, Africa, Indonesia, etc., which forms a highly elastic and flexible substance, used originally for rubbing out lead pencil marks and later for many other purposes (now largely replaced by synthetic rubbers). In later use shortened to rubber. The usual commercial source of natural rubber is the Para rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis (family Euphorbiaceae), though many other plants have been used, e.g. the Indian rubber tree, Ficus elastica, and the Panama rubber tree, Castilla elastica (both of the family Moraceae).
