Etymology: < scientific Latin infossus (1854 or earlier in zoology, 1865 or earlier as a specific epithet in mycology), specific use of classical Latin infossus, past participle of infodere to bury, to produce by digging, to dig a hole in, excavate ( < in- in- prefix³ + fodere to dig: see fodient adj.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1900) gives the pronunciation as (infǫ·səs) /ɪnˈfɒsəs/.

Botany. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

Embedded or sunken in a narrow channel (see quot. 1866).
