Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French infortunité.
Etymology: < Middle French infortunité misfortune (13th cent. in Old French) < classical Latin infortūnitās (2nd cent. a.d. in Aulus Gellius) < in- in- prefix4 + fortūna fortune n. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix), perhaps after infēlīcitās infelicity n. Compare infortune n., infortuny n.The relevant passage of Aulus Gellius (6. 1. 5) is cited by Lactantius Epitome 29. 9 (3rd cent.), but here some editors read importūnitās importunity n.
Now rare.
